B2B vs B2C travel portal: which does your agency need (and can you run both)?

The operational, pricing and technical differences between selling to travellers and selling to agents — and how a multi-tenant portal lets you run both from one system.

Short answer

A B2C travel portal sells directly to travellers: public prices, card payment at checkout, marketing-led demand. A B2B travel portal sells to other agents and corporates: net rates, agent logins, credit limits and wallets, and invoice-based settlement. Most agencies should start with the one that matches their existing demand — and yes, you can run both from a single multi-tenant platform with separate branding, pricing and reporting per channel.

The real difference is money flow, not the website

People assume B2B and B2C portals differ by design. They differ by how money and trust move. In B2C, a stranger pays you in full by card before travel and you carry chargeback risk. In B2B, a known agent books against a credit limit or a prepaid wallet, you invoice weekly or monthly, and you carry credit risk instead.

That single difference cascades through everything: pricing display, checkout, documents, accounting and support.

What a B2C portal needs

Public gross prices with taxes and fees shown, a fast conversion-focused search, card payment at checkout, instant confirmation and self-service manage-my-booking. Behind it: markup rules by product and market, refund handling, and marketing infrastructure — SEO pages, tracking, abandoned-cart follow-up. Your cost of acquisition is the number that decides whether the channel works.

What a B2B portal needs

Agent registration and approval, per-agent or per-group net rates and commission bands, credit limits and wallet top-ups, booking on account, markup applied by the agent for their own customer, white-labelled vouchers carrying the agent's brand rather than yours, statements that reconcile, and sub-agent hierarchies. Support is a phone call from a professional, not a chatbot for a nervous holidaymaker.

Which should you start with?

Start where your demand already is. If you have a network of retail agents, corporate clients or overseas partners who currently email you for quotes, B2B is a faster path to revenue: no acquisition spend, larger baskets, and each partner brings repeat volume. If your enquiries come from travellers on social media or search, B2C is the honest answer and you should invest in content and conversion.

The failure mode is building B2B because the margins look better while having no agent relationships to onboard. A B2B portal with no agents is an empty shop.

Running both

Most agencies eventually run both — a consumer brand for retail demand and a partner portal for trade. The mistake is running them in two disconnected systems, which duplicates inventory, markup rules, bookings and reporting, and guarantees the numbers never agree.

The clean answer is one multi-tenant platform with two tenants: separate branding, domains, pricing rules, staff permissions and reports, on shared supplier connections and one consolidated ledger. Data separation is enforced at the database level rather than by an application filter, so a B2B partner can never see retail customers and vice versa. Agent wallets, credit limits and commission bands live only in the B2B tenant, while public markups and card checkout live only in the B2C one.

Done properly, you sell the same seat to a traveller and to an agent at different prices, from the same supplier connection, and see both in a single revenue report.
